Doula - A doula refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. She believes in "mothering the mother" - enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum.
A doula is a friendly face, someone who knows what the mother wants, someone whose focus is on the mother and not hospital protocols or shift times. She takes the lead from the mother; being as involved as much as the mother wants in any situation. Sometimes just knowing that a friendly support is in the room is enough for a mother, other times mum wants a hand to hold; help to focus her in relaxation; or more practical help. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.
In 2007 I trained with the world renowned obstetrician Michel Odent (who has written 11 published books on childbirth) and Lilliana Lammers of Paramanadoula. I am registered with www.doula.org.uk and am considered a trainee doula by them until I have attended four births since joining. My first birth since registering was a beautiful home birth which I felt very honoured to attend.
The mother, Claire C from South Woodford said: "During the birth I found that Jackie kept me focused and relaxed, it was amazing".
My next definite availability (ie that I can guarantee I will attend the birth) is November 2008, however I am also happy to offer my services on an ad hoc basis - see below.
Ad Hoc Doula - If you like the idea of having a doula but do not wish to make a definite commitment, I am happy to offer my service as follows:
An initial meeting to discuss what you are looking for in your birth and how you feel I could support you - this would be charged at £50.
Then on the day of your birth you would have the choice to call me or not.
If you decide not to call me the £50 is non refundable. However, if you wanted me and I was unable to attend then the £50 would be refunded. The normal fee for attending the birth would apply.
Cost
Whilst I am considered a trainee doula by Doula UK, I am offering the recommended fee of £150.00, this includes one ante natal visit, one post natal visit and attending the birth. |
