Doula - A doula refers to an experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to a woman (or couple) before, during and after childbirth. She believes in "mothering the mother" - enabling a woman to have the most satisfying and empowered time that she can during pregnancy, birth and the early days as a new mum.
A doula is a friendly face, someone who knows what the mother wants, someone whose focus is on the mother and not hospital protocols or shift times. She takes the lead from the mother; being as involved as much as the mother wants in any situation. Sometimes just knowing that a friendly support is in the room is enough for a mother, other times mum wants a hand to hold; help to focus her in relaxation; or more practical help. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.
In 2007 I trained with the world renowned obstetrician Michel Odent (who has written 11 published books on childbirth) and Lilliana Lammers of Paramanadoula. I am registered with www.doula.org.uk .
My first birth since registering with Doula UK was a beautiful home birth which I felt very honoured to attend. The mother, Claire C from South Woodford said: "During the birth I found that Jackie kept me focused and relaxed, it was amazing".
